MUNICH(AP) Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger says the Champions League takes priority over the Bundesliga this year.
''In a year when you have the ... final in Munich, one should also aim to get there,'' Schweinsteiger said Monday. ''As such, the Champions League has a little more priority than the championship.''
The midfielder, who has almost fully recovered from a broken collarbone sustained on Nov. 2, was speaking as the Bayern side flew out for a weeklong training camp in Doha, Qatar.
Schweinsteiger is not yet certain whether he'll play a full part in training.
''I'll have to work my way into it. It's not so good throwing heavy things around just yet,'' the 27-year-old said.
Bayern is the first German club to go back to work after the Christmas break, and coach Jupp Heynckes will be able to work a full squad after calling up all his players, including long-term absentee Breno.
''It's very important to be able to train properly again,'' said Heynckes, who will focus on physical and tactical work, including set play routines.
''We've been unable to work on this for many weeks because we were playing every three or four days and recovery was more important,'' Heynckes said. ''It meant we were forced to neglect one or two things.''
Bayern, which leads the Bundesliga by three points, will play friendlies against Egyptian club Al-Ahly in Doha on Saturday and against India in New Delhi on Jan. 10, before returning to restart the league against Borussia Moenchengladbach on Jan. 20.
''Now we must see that we create a good basis and that we work well in Doha,'' Schweinsteiger said. ''That's very important when you have so many games.''
