Meet the ‘man in magic gloves’, India’s goalkeeper, Subrata Paul. He is often referred to as India’s “best goalie” and is one of the key factors in the team’s recent success and solidity. Paul was appropriately felicitated with the 2009 AIFF Player of the Year award for his impeccable performance in the 12 months gone by. He was the single biggest star at India’s glittering Nehru Cup triumph in August 2009 and this effort was the most recent in a string of great shows from the Pune FC custodian. Paul has come a long way since he first stood under the bar as a professional football player in 2004. A freak mid-game incident involving Brazilian Cristiano Junior - who died on the field after a collision with Paul- has been the single biggest blotch in an otherwise gleaming career at all levels. Despite the pressures of guarding the goalpost, and all the negative advice that Paul received - dissuading him about being a goalie - the West Bengal lad was attracted irreversibly to the toughest spot on the football pitch. Just turning 23 in December 2009, this young bloke is on the right track to fulfill his dream of becoming the best goalkeeper in Asia and perhaps even one of the best in the World.

“I’ve always been a goalkeeper since I was young and I have no idea why I love this position so much even though everybody else dislikes it!”
