Mahesh Gawli or “Zeba” as he is called by his friends, is the rock at the heart of the Indian team defence. The Goan, got his first major break at Churchill Bros after flourishing stints at FC Cochin and Tata Football Academy. Success has never eluded him, having won a Kerala League title with FC Kochin, 3 Goan League titles in his time with Churchill Bros., The ASEAN Cup 2003 and the National first Division league title with East Bengal and later on with Mahindra Untied. Gawli won three consecutive “Defender of the Year” titles at Mahindra United and continued that winning streak with the national team. His most successful spell has come with Dempo SC where he has won two successive national league titles and helped his team reach the semi-finals of the AFC Cup. He is a good reader of the game and has a very special ability to anticipate situations during a game. The twenty-nine year old, is the most reliable defender at Bob Houghton’s disposal and is going strong as ever.
