The tallest man in what is a very diminutive Indian side, Anwar Ali, was first scouted by JCT Mills from a local club in Punjab. Ali impressed in his first year at JCT bagging the award for the most promising defender during Durand Cup 2006. His mere presence has given Bob Houghton a much needed option for the aerial challenges. He joined Dempo SC in 2009 along with his India teammate Sunil Chhetri.

Ali has formed a formidable partnership with Gouramangi Singh in the middle of the Dempo defense. He was also a vital part of the side that won the Nehru Cup in 2007 and in 2009 and has been called for the Asia Cup Qualifiers camp by coach Bob Houghton. Having played 18 times for the country, the Punjab lad has fond memories of the Nehru Cup success, a performance that he holds very close to his heart.

Despite his success, the defender still remains very much grounded. Speaking about his success mantra, he once reportedly said, “One should always follow the instructions given by seniors and coaches. It is only because of my coach’s special attention that I am where I am now.”
