EPL Season 20 finale - A rollercoaster of emotions

For 2 fleeting minutes last night, the Premier League trophy was hurtling towards the red side of Manchester. Man Utd had played their 93 minutes and with City staring down the barrel, you would have forgiven the premature celebrations emanating out of the Stadium of Light. Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero turned out to be the party-poopers eventually, but what a way to crash a party!

This has to go down as one of the wackiest, unpredictable, mind-numbing yet exhilarating English Premier League season for a long time. In the end, the title was won in the last-minute of the last game of the season. As a child, every footballer dreams of being the last-minute hero who saves the day, and didn’t Aguero do just that? What a player, what a moment, what a season. Unforgettable scenes, etched in the memories of those lucky enough to witness it.

Joey Barton played his part as the pantomime villain perfectly. Every story needs a bad guy who beats up the good guy, only for the latter to come back in a bigger, better way. Can you imagine the mood today if City had played out an easy 3-0 win?

Let’s be honest, you wouldn’t have remembered the season with this much fondness if you were a neutral and City had cantered to the title. Where’s the drama in that? For the game to go down to the wire, QPR had to play with 10 men and repel all attacks. An “Us against Them” kind of mentality had taken over and QPR performed admirably to hold out Man City till the last 5 minutes.

While we congratulate the eventual winners, let’s take a moment to send out our commiserations to Sir Alex’s team. 89 points would have been enough to win the title in the last 4 years, but finishing second on GD to a top-class team and manager is no mean achievement. City did a United last night, coming back from the dead to win with seconds to spare. For once, “Fergie time” did not help its namesake.

So that’s all folks ! The 20th edition of the EPL is on its way out, to be replaced by the next season and the season after. Seasons change, players and managers change and the cycle goes on. But in the infinite realms of space and time, Manchester City can point to this moment as one that changed the face of the club. CHAMPIONS OF ENGLAND!
