Have Your Say : Chelsea - Arsenal Combined XI

FootballIndia.com's Adrian Sequeira comes up with his Chelsea - Arsenal combined XI for this season. What do you think?

Till about a couple of seasons, it was a given that Petr Cech would hands down take up this slot against any other keeper in the league. But this year has proven otherwise, Cech has been shaky and not as intimidating as in seasons gone by.

On the other hand, Wojciech Szczesny has grabbed his opportunity at being Arsenal’s no 1 with both hands. His 12 clean sheets in 34 games this season has ensured the Arsenal shot stopper nicks the goalkeeping duties from his Chelsea counterpart.

Chelsea-Arsenal Combined XI

In defence we have Bacary Sagna at right back, who makes it despite having had a stop start season limiting him to just 18 appearances this season. But while he has been available for the Gunners his attacking play has added a threat to Arsenal going forward.

Joining Sagna are Branislav Ivanovic & Thomas Vermaelen in the heart of defence. While Terry might have been the senior figure in the Chelsea defence, Ivanovic has weighed in with crucial goals this season, particularly off late.

Like Ivanovic, Vermaelen has scored freely this season, his tally at 6 for the season. In addition, his presence adds a calming influence to the Arsenal defence reflected in the 12 clean sheets the team has kept this season.

Rounding up the back four is Chelsea’s Ashley Cole, simply because of lack of quality of competition for this spot rather than performance. While Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs had a bright start to the season his Arsenal rival Andre Santos has been shaky at best. So Cole fits in to the 11 as being best of the worst in a sense.

Anchoring the midfield is Arsenal’s Alex Song who has bloomed this season. Shielding the defence, he has been outstanding this season and has added another crucial element to his game in the form of assists. He has 9 assists in the league for the team, which is next only to captain Van Persie this season.

While Frank Lampard has been often criticized this season, there is no doubting that he still pulls the strings in the Blues midfield and as in previous seasons, scores crucial goals. His tally of 11 may not match up to his usual high standards but his value to the side cannot be undermined.

Completing our midfield trio is the Ramires, who for me has been the Blues’ most improved player of the season. While he may not have the conventional Brazilian flair he more than makes up for it with his abundance of energy and willingness to make things happen.

First name for this position undoubtedly has to be captain fantastic Robin Van Persie, who is having a phenomenal season scoring freely. His 27 goals and 11 assists in the league so far has made him an obvious target for European heavyweights Real Madrid & Barcelona and local moneybags Manchester City

On the left of Van Persie we have Spanish maestro Juan Mata, who has had a dream debut season and is potentially Chelsea’s player of the season. He possesses the potential to turn a game on its head and only better things can be expected from him next season.

Our final pick for the Right Forward position and potentially a controversial one is Daniel Sturridge who admittedly prefers playing at center forward but has been deployed more often than not on the left hand side. With 10 goals and 3 assists to his name in the league he has kept out the inconsistent Theo Walcott who for me is still not yet the finished article

Adrian thinks this is the best Chelsea-Arsenal combined XI. Do you have a better one in mind? Let us know via the comments !
