Shock and Horror: United lose at Basel, follow City into Europa League

On a disastrous night for Manchester, the top 2 Premier League teams were unceremoniously dumped out of the Champions League. Man United were beaten by FC Basel 2-1 with Phil Jones’ consolation goal being just that – a mere consolation. Manchester City did what they had to do, beating a young, experimental Bayern side 2-0. But Napoli’s win over Villareal was enough to render City’s efforts in vain as they finished 3rd in the group to end up in the Europa League.

Manchester United’s performance and result, however took the cake. On a day that was marked by confident claims of progression by the Manager and the players alike, not a single United player stepped up to save the side from utter embarrassment. United went behind in the first 10 minutes and apart from a shot on the woodwork, didn’t do much justice to their history.

A night of misery for Sir Alex and his troops was further compounded when Nemanja Vidic had to be strechered off after twisting his knee. Ligament damage is suspected and it is expected the Serbian powerhouse will be out for a substantial part of the hectic Christmas schedule.

Thursday night football awaits both Manchester clubs and although winning the Europa League will not any consolation for either, atleast there is a chance of yet another derby match. United have already been drawn to face City in the FA Cup 3rd round in early January.
